About the Client: Varian provides leading edge tools and solutions for diverse, high-growth applications in life science and industry. Varian’s instruments and solutions are key tools in bio-molecular and academic research, pharmaceutical R&D and manufacturing, and industrial R&D and quality control, and from disease-resistant crops to cosmetics to testing drinking water and monitoring quality in the petrochemical industry.

Project Description: Varian, Inc. engaged Nova Partners to be the project manager for the Walnut Creek campus, which is the hub for Varian’s Northern California operations. The project consists of seismic upgrades and various renovations of two existing buildings totaling 89,900 sf as well as a new ground-up, single story 43,700 sf, Type III B, fully sprinklered facility combining both laboratory and office environments called the Information Rich Detection (IRD) Center. As a world class IRD Center, Varian will combine its Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and mass spectrometry expertise to optimize the development and manufacturing of those products. The project totaled 133,600 sf and has a value in excess of $25M and was completed in 2009.

Special Features and Challenges: The project included the installation of multiple high profile laboratory spaces to be designed within a tight temperature constraint of +/- 1 degree Celsius. These labs are intended for front-end interface with current and potential clients. Nearby open office, training, conference, lunch, work rooms and copy/pantry areas provide a work environment for employees.

Nova Partners’ Role: Nova Partners was engaged by Varian Inc. to provide development management services including managing architect, contractor, developing the project budget, schedule, and being responsible to deliver project on-time and on-budget.
