USGBC Sustainability Status:
Achieved LEED Platinum
About the Client:

Adobe Systems is a San Jose, California-based software company offering business, creative, and mobile software solutions that revolutionize how the world engages with ideas and information.

Project Description:

Adobe owns its 1,000,000 sf corporate headquarters in San Jose, a LEED Platinum project, that includes numerous server rooms. Our scope was to develop and analyze the pro-forma, negotiate and document all contracts, manage all grants and rebates, manage the design, installation and commissioning of this two-phase 3mW fuel cell project.

Fuel cells offer baseload power solutions that operate 24/7 and can dramatically reduce dependence on the power grid. The non-combustion, electrochemical process is a direct form of fuel-to-energy conversion, and is much more efficient than conventional central power plant generation.

The solid oxide fuel cell project will be done in 2 phases, and the first phase is completed and operational. The first phase includes twelve 100kW Bloom Energy fuel cells located on level 5 of the West Tower parking structure. This phase of the project will provide a total of 400kW of power for each tower totaling 1200mW.

Phase 2, planned for 2012, will increase the total number of fuel cells by three units bringing the number of fuel cells to 15 at 200 kW each, for a total generating capacity of 3mW. This will be one of the largest solid oxide fuel cell installations in the world.

The project will provide approximately 100% of Adobe’s base power load, reducing operating costs by generating clean, reliable electricity at a substantial cost savings compared to PG&E’s pricing and utilize renewable gas from a landfill source.

Nova Partners' Role:

Nova is the development and construction project manager helping Adobe to manage the financial analysis, design, permitting, and construction of its fuel cell project.
