Verily Life Sciences

About This Project

About the client: Verily Life Sciences, also known as Verily, is Alphabet Inc.’s research organization devoted to the study of life sciences.

About the project: Verily leased a three-building campus from for its headquarters in the heart of Bay Area biotech, South San Francisco. The existing buildings were comprised of a mix of build-out office, lab and an entire empty shell. The client’s lab needs required a flexible and adaptable lab environment in addition to specialized clean and bio- safety environmentally controlled spaces. Verily also wanted to create a headquarters/admin building on campus with a high end conferencing center and employee amenities.

Architect: DGA

General Contractor: DPR

Size: 250,000 sf

Cost: $80,000,000

Upon hiring Nova Partners, Verily had nine months for the design, construction, fit-up and move of 250,000 sf of lab, cleanroom and a new admin headquarters. Nova worked with the the team leads to set up a lean and collaborative “Big Room,” Design-Build team, which was able to go from programming to permit in under four months. Flexible MEP and lab design strategies were used to allow construction to begin ahead of 100% design and Lean, fast-track project strategies were implemented by Nova to allow the team to communicate clearly and make decisions quickly.

The new campus has approximately 90,000 sf of new labs, most of which are served by flexible, quick-connect ceiling service panels, which deliver power, data and lab gases to flexible and moveable lab benches. The project also includes a 6,000 sf ISO 8 Clean Room and a large suite of BSL2 labs.

The administration space building has amenities including a Partner-Plex, which is 2400 SF with an executive conference center and 3 conference rooms. The fitness center, 3,900 SF, includes full locker rooms, a gym, and yoga room. Additionally, a 3 story atrium includes natural wood architectural features, mixed with green plants and furniture. With the large amount of sunlight, the space feels more like an outdoor patio than and inner lobby in the main building. Located right next the atrium, is a full service coffee bar which has brand new millwork, undercounter refrigeration for grab’n’go food, and soft seating.
